Geriatric Care Managers

Geriatric Care Managers are health and human services specialists who help families care for older relatives, while encouraging as much independence as possible. The Geriatric Care Manager may be trained in any of a number of fields related to long-term care, including, but not limited to, nursing, gerontology, social work, or psychology, with a specialized focus on issues related to aging and elder care. The Geriatric Care Manager acts as a guide and advocate -- identifying problems and offering solutions, from assessment of an aging parent's needs to addressing the life change of a family affected by Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson’s or other symptoms of dementia.
If possible, it’s a good idea to personally interview the care manager and ask about their qualifications. Check their experience, education, references, and membership in professional care manager associations. It is recommended that you take the time to make an informed decision about the best GCM for meeting your needs and find one conveniently located near your elderly loved one. Obviously, you’ll want someone you can trust, so it’s important to find someone with good communication – you’ll want to rest assured that your Geriatric Care Manager is available and reliable in handling emergencies.
The costs of obtaining a Geriatric Care Manager can be substantial - especially in the initial assessment stages - and range from $50 to $150 per hour depending on location, qualifications, and actual services being provided. They are billed on a fee for service basis usually and are not covered by Medicaid, Medicare, or most private insurance policies. However, in certain cases, charges are billed to insurance carriers depending on specific coverage they offer and the history of an individual case. We can help you sort all of that out.
