Many older people, who do not drive, must rely on family and friends to provide much of the transportation. But for others, it is necessary to find community resources to provide transportation, as this vital support service may be their only connection to the outside world. The availability of adequate transportation enables older persons to live independently in their communities, helps to prevent isolation and the possible need for long-term care placement. And obviously, some kind of transportation will always be needed for essential services such as medical care or grocery shopping.
There are a variety of transportation services available to seniors. You’ll need to determine which service best meets your needs, depending on whether you’re looking for yourself, a family member or a friend. “Door-to-door” service refers to transportation from one specific location to another, and requires advanced notice. It is the most flexible of the services, but it also usually requires fees. “Fixed route” or “fee per ride” services transport riders along an established route with predetermined stops at designated locations. Although this service provides less flexibility than door-to-door service, the fees are less (and also may be discounted for seniors) and advanced reservations are not required. Another option could be a “ridesharing” program, which generally arranges transportation to older persons to specific destinations, such as senior centers, adult day care, and health-related appointments with volunteer drivers.
